Grenaches du Monde Returns to Roussillon for 2026, Marking Maury DOP’s 90th Anniversary

Grenaches du Monde, the international wine competition dedicated to Grenache-based wines, has confirmed its return to Roussillon for its 2026 edition. The event will take place from May 10 to May 13 in Argelès-sur-Mer, a coastal town in southern France. The venue will be the Maison de la Mer, a modern facility known for its open architecture and environmental commitment, located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees mountains.

This announcement follows previous editions held in Manhattan, Paris, and Aragón. Organizers say the decision to return to Roussillon is both symbolic and practical. The region is historically linked to Grenache, a grape variety that thrives in Mediterranean climates and is known for its resilience to changing weather conditions. Local officials, including Antoine Parra, mayor of Argelès-sur-Mer and president of the Albères – Côte Vermeille – Illibéris community of municipalities, have expressed pride in hosting the event. They highlight the area’s tradition of hospitality and its role as a meeting point for wine professionals from around the world.

The 2026 edition will coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Maury Protected Designation of Origin (DOP), a local appellation recognized for its fortified Grenache wines. This milestone adds historical significance to the event and is expected to draw attention to the region’s winemaking heritage.

Fabrice Rieu, president of Grenaches du Monde, said that returning to Roussillon is a way to reconnect with the roots of Grenache. He emphasized that this grape has developed a unique character in the region and that hosting the competition there pays tribute to both tradition and innovation in viticulture.

The competition will bring together an international jury of sommeliers, journalists, buyers, and producers. Participants will evaluate wines from various countries where Grenache is grown, including France, Spain, Italy, Australia, and the United States. The event aims to showcase the diversity of Grenache expressions and promote dialogue among wine professionals.

Sustainability will be a central theme at this year’s competition. Organizers plan to highlight practices that address climate challenges in viticulture. The choice of Maison de la Mer as a venue reflects this focus on environmental responsibility.

Tourism officials expect an increase in visitors during the event. Local businesses are preparing for an influx of wine enthusiasts who will explore not only Argelès-sur-Mer but also neighboring towns within the Albères – Côte Vermeille – Illibéris community. The region is known for its scenic landscapes, combining vineyards with sea views and mountain backdrops.

Grenaches du Monde was first held in Roussillon in 2013 before expanding internationally. Its return marks a new chapter for both the competition and the region’s wine industry. Organizers say they hope this edition will reinforce Roussillon’s reputation as a reference point for Grenache wines on the global stage.
