Tim Atkin named new Canary Wine Ambassador at Tenerife ceremony

Tim Atkin MW, one of the world’s most respected wine critics, has been named the new Canary Wine Ambassador by the Denominación de Origen Protegida Islas Canarias – Canary Wine. The announcement was made during the awards ceremony for the 22nd Regional Canary Islands Wine List Competition for Hospitality, Restaurants, and Specialty Stores. The event took place on Tuesday, July 15, at the headquarters of the Islas Canarias – Canary Wine and Ycoden Daute Isora Regulatory Councils in La Guancha, Tenerife.

The Canary Wine Ambassador distinction is awarded annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting and enhancing the reputation of Canary Islands wines worldwide. Tim Atkin, a British journalist and photographer, is widely recognized for his influence in the global wine industry. Although he began his professional career in economics in London, Atkin soon found his true calling in wine. Over more than three decades, he has built a distinguished career as a writer, critic, and Master of Wine—a title that reflects years of rigorous study and dedication.

Atkin’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including awards from the International Wine Challenge. He is known for his detailed reports and articles on wine regions across the globe. In his recent “Islas Canarias 2025 Report,” Atkin tasted over 500 wines from the archipelago, highlighting their quality, character, and diversity. His analytical approach and commitment to understanding local terroir have helped bring international attention to Canary Islands wines.

During the ceremony in La Guancha, a video message from David Seijas, last year’s Canary Wine Ambassador, was shown. Seijas congratulated Atkin and expressed admiration for his work. Juan Jesús Méndez Siverio, president of the DOP Islas Canarias – Canary Wine Management Body, presented Atkin with the official distinction. Méndez praised Atkin’s passion for sharing knowledge about Canary wines and his ability to connect with global audiences. He emphasized that Atkin’s appointment marks an important step toward strengthening the international presence of Canary Islands wines while respecting their unique origins.

In his acceptance speech, Tim Atkin expressed gratitude for the honor and shared his enthusiasm for the region’s wines. He spoke about his deep admiration for both the wines themselves and the ongoing efforts within the archipelago to preserve its viticultural heritage. Atkin noted that “Canary wine has returned to its roots; these ancient forgotten vineyards have been revived with vision, courage, and authenticity.” He also acknowledged the hard work of local growers, winemakers, and industry professionals who are safeguarding native grape varieties and building a strong identity for Canary Islands wines on the world stage.

The recognition of Tim Atkin as Canary Wine Ambassador comes at a time when interest in wines from volcanic regions is growing internationally. The unique climate and soils of the Canary Islands produce wines with distinct flavors that are increasingly sought after by sommeliers and consumers alike. The award aims to further raise awareness of these wines beyond Spain’s borders and support ongoing efforts to protect traditional vineyards throughout the islands.
