European winemakers are facing uncertainty over potential U.S. tariffs on their products. At the Wine Paris event, industry professionals expressed mixed feelings of concern and resignation. Gabriel Picard, president of the French Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters, voiced his apprehension but remained hopeful, saying they are waiting to see what happens. The European wine and spirits sector, heavily reliant on exports, fears it could be the next target of the Trump administration's trade policies. This follows U.S. tariffs on Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese goods, as well as duties on steel and aluminum.
Miles Beale, head of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association in the UK, believes a trade war is likely, suggesting it's a matter of when, not if. He noted that the market is bracing for impact. Mathilde Chapoutier, commercial director of M. Chapoutier, a major wine producer in the Rhône Valley, shared her concerns. She mentioned that the industry is often caught in economic conflicts, even if not directly involved. Chapoutier emphasized the importance of resilience and adapting to challenges. Her company aims to diversify across multiple countries to balance potential losses.
During his first term, Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on certain European wines. This was part of a broader dispute between the U.S. and Europe over aerospace subsidies, costing the wine industry 500 million euros in 2020. The possibility of new tariffs has left European winemakers on edge, as they prepare for potential economic fallout. The industry is trying to navigate these challenges by expanding their market reach and maintaining flexibility in their strategies.
