European Commission's cancer plan raises concerns in spirits industry

The European Commission's "Beating Cancer Plan" is causing concern in the spirits industry. AssoDistil, an association representing the Italian distillation sector for over 75 years, warns that the plan could heavily impact the spirits industry.

The plan includes potential tax increases on alcoholic products and other measures aimed at reducing alcohol abuse.

Sandro Cobror, director of AssoDistil, acknowledges the importance of promoting moderate alcohol consumption, aligning with Italian values and lifestyle. However, he highlights the potential harm to a strategic sector for Italy. Spirits already face higher taxes compared to other alcoholic beverages, and further increases could severely affect an industry already struggling, especially after the Salvini Decree.

Cobror also points out that the plan could negatively impact Italian Grappa and Brandy, which are protected geographical indications by the European Union. The EU itself promotes these products globally, making the tax increase seem contradictory. Additionally, the introduction of informative labels, including nutritional values, raises concerns about potential negative perceptions.
