The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) has updated the global wine production figures for 2024 after identifying an error in its preliminary report, which had caused discontent among Hungarian producers. According to Hungary's Ministry of Agriculture, the error in the initial OIV report stemmed from the inclusion of musts—a component not typically considered in vinified production statistics.

On Wednesday, December 18, the OIV issued a statement acknowledging the issue. It explained that an internal review had revealed an incorrect update in its data series. The revised report, now available on the organization's official website, excludes musts and reflects only vinified production figures, aligning with its standard methodology.

In its initial report, the OIV estimated Hungary's wine production at 3 million hectoliters, which represented a 22% increase compared to the previous year. However, the corrected figures now place the actual production at 2.3 million hectoliters, showing a 7% decline from 2023. These adjustments align with observations from Hungarian producers and the Ministry of Agriculture, who had pointed out inconsistencies in the previously published data.

Hungary's Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the dissatisfaction expressed by producers following the release of the preliminary data, prompting widespread reporting on the error. The OIV's subsequent revision addresses the confusion surrounding Hungary's wine production figures and emphasizes the importance of accuracy in global statistical reporting.

The updated report, dated November 29, 2024, includes the corrected data and is available for download. The OIV stated that this correction reflects its commitment to precision and transparency in delivering critical data for the global wine industry.
