The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) has issued a statement celebrating the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration signed by 37 countries, which expresses strong support for the wine sector and reaffirms confidence in the OIV as a global reference in this field. This declaration was presented at the conclusion of a ministerial meeting of OIV members, organized by France, where essential issues for the future of the sector were discussed.
The OIV's Director General highlighted the importance of this declaration, describing it as a significant act of support for both the organization and the wine sector at a critical moment for both. The ministers present at the meeting acknowledged not only the economic value of the vine and wine sector but also its social and cultural relevance. This declaration reflects the consensus among member countries and their commitment to science and cooperation, principles that the OIV has promoted during its 100 years of existence.
One of the key issues addressed during the meeting was sustainability. The ministers recognized the current challenges facing the vine and wine sector, particularly those related to climate change, shifting consumption patterns, and uncertainty in international trade. Participants agreed that it is essential for the sector to adopt sustainable practices from an environmental, economic, and social perspective. They emphasized the importance of cooperation and knowledge exchange as ways to foster innovation in this sector.
The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to the OIV, stressing the importance of the scientific work it carries out to guide the sector and promote international harmonization in areas related to viticulture and enology. During the discussions, the need to strengthen collaboration with other international organizations was also emphasized to overcome global challenges in a coordinated manner.
The Ministerial Declaration has been welcomed enthusiastically by the OIV, which sees this gesture as a significant boost as it begins its second century of existence. This support also aligns with the new strategic plan that the OIV will adopt at its upcoming General Assembly, scheduled for October 18.
Founded a century ago, the OIV has established itself as the leading intergovernmental organization on viticulture issues, providing standards, guidance, and technical information to the sector. It currently has 50 member states, representing 75% of the world's vine-growing area, 87% of global wine production, and 71% of global wine consumption. Twice a year, more than 500 experts from these countries meet to discuss and approve resolutions by consensus in four key areas: viticulture and table grapes, enology and analysis methods, wine legislation and economics, and consumer health and safety.
