The Chiarlo family has unveiled the Cannubi Path, a new artistic journey created by Ugo Nespolo and dedicated to Michele Chiarlo. This project, inspired by the renowned Art Park La Court, has opened to the public in the Cannubi vineyard, offering visitors a unique experience that blends art and viticulture. Located in Barolo, the Cannubi Path will be accessible year-round, except during the harvest season, and aims to celebrate Cannubi's cultural and historical significance. Stefano Chiarlo, co-owner and winemaker, expressed his pride in continuing a legacy that began nearly 70 years ago, noting that this new endeavor invites people to experience the passion and heritage behind the vineyards. His brother, Alberto Chiarlo, highlighted the project's roots in a transformative moment during a sunset party at Cerequio in 1996, which shifted their focus from simply producing fine wine to sharing the beauty of their vineyards with a wider audience.
The Cannubi Path takes inspiration from the Art Park La Court, which was also shaped by Nespolo's artistic vision. It offers a multisensory journey through Italy's oldest cru, featuring installations that invite visitors to engage deeply with the landscape and the artistry behind the winemaking process. Set amidst the vines and traditional ciabot (small rural buildings), these installations pay homage to the land and the Chiarlo family's long-standing dedication to viticulture. The path is a continuation of the collaboration between Nespolo and Michele Chiarlo, which has previously resulted in significant projects such as the Art Park La Court and the label design for La Court Vignaveja Nizza DOCG Riserva.
The new path is part of a series of developments for Chiarlo in 2024, including the opening of the Sky Bar & Lounge at the Palás Cerequio resort in La Morra in June and the current exhibition "Nespolo & Chiarlo: since 2010, Art in the Vineyard," on display in the Caveau of Barolo until the end of the year. This exhibition features a selection of Nespolo's key works and sketches that narrate his decade-long collaboration with the winery.
Cannubi holds a special place in the Langhe region's history, with its name dating back to a bottle produced in 1752, preserved today in the Manzone family archive. The vineyard's reputation was cemented in 1879 by Lorenzo Fantini, who recognized it as one of the top zones for viticulture. Cannubi's distinctive terroir arises from the meeting of two geological formations: the firm Helvetian soils and the softer Tortonian ones. Each subzone—Cannubi Boschis, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Cannubi Muscatel, and Cannubi Valletta—contributes to the vineyard's unique profile. The Chiarlo family cultivates one hectare in the historic heart of Cannubi, facing the town of Barolo, where the steep terrain requires specialized terracing to optimize sunlight and prevent erosion. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Nebbiolo, producing the Barolo DOCG Cannubi and the Barolo DOCG Cannubi Riserva, both celebrated for their elegance and longevity.
