China’s tracked baijiu basket stalled at 10,784 yuan after four daily gains
Sina Finance’s monitor showed a 0% move on Oct. 20, reflecting an even split of risers, decliners and unchanged labels

Retail baijiu prices in China were flat on Oct. 20, ending a run of four straight daily increases, according to a daily market tracker published by Sina Finance.
The outlet’s Jiujia Neican price monitor put a theoretical basket of 12 baijiu products at 10,784 yuan, unchanged from the previous day. The reading was based on nominal retail transaction prices published at 9:34 a.m. local time and gathered over the prior 24 hours.
The unchanged basket value marked a pause in a short recent recovery in tracked prices. While the overall figure did not move, the individual products inside the basket did not all behave the same way. Four of the 12 references rose from the day before, four fell and four were unchanged, showing mixed pricing across the segment rather than a broad move in one direction.
Baijiu is China’s main category of traditional distilled spirits, and retail prices for well-known labels are closely watched by investors, distributors and liquor merchants as a sign of market conditions. In this case, however, the indicator is narrow. The basket reflects one bottle of each of the 12 products followed by the monitor. It is not a measure of sales volume, consumer spending or total market revenue.
Sina Finance said the Jiujia Neican tracker compiles prices from about 200 points across China, including distributors, retail stores and online platforms. The data therefore offers a snapshot of transaction prices in a limited commercial sample. It is produced by a financial news platform, not by a government statistics agency, and the figures should be read as a market signal rather than an official measure of the Chinese liquor industry.
The latest reading showed no daily change in either yuan terms or percentage terms, with the basket posting a 0% move from Oct. 19. That flat performance interrupted the previous four-day sequence of gains, but it did not by itself establish a new trend. A single stable session can reflect temporary balance between products moving in opposite directions as much as any broader shift in pricing power.
The daily update did not provide a comparable year-earlier figure or a standardized cumulative change over a longer period. That means the data cannot support a clear year-over-year assessment of the market, and it does not show whether current prices are high or low by historical standards. It also does not allow a direct reading on changes in consumption, since retail price movements can be influenced by channel promotions, distributor inventory decisions, local competition and differences between online and offline sales.
Even so, the pause is notable because it comes after several days in which the tracked basket moved higher. For traders and businesses that follow baijiu pricing closely, a flat headline number after four advances may suggest that the recent upward move is losing momentum, at least in the short term. At the same time, the split between rising, falling and unchanged references points to a market where pricing conditions still vary widely by product.
That uneven pattern matters in the baijiu business, where the market is shaped by strong brand differences, regional distribution networks and a wide range of price points. Premium labels can move differently from mass-market products, and local channel conditions can produce price changes that do not immediately spread nationwide. Because the Jiujia Neican basket tracks only 12 references, the indicator can capture movement in key labels without representing the full range of China’s liquor retail market.
The Oct. 20 reading therefore offers a narrow but timely look at current pricing. It shows that the recent climb in the monitored basket stopped for now, even as individual products continued to diverge. Sina Finance’s figures point to a market that remains active but mixed, with no clear unified direction across the 12 baijiu references included in the daily basket.
