Crémant de Bourgogne, the sparkling wine from Burgundy, continues to strengthen its position in the regional wine economy. According to a statement released in March 2026 by the Union of Producers and Makers of Crémant de Bourgogne, the year 2025 was one of the most significant years for production in the history of the appellation. The region produced 231,000 hectoliters, making it one of the largest harvests ever recorded for Crémant de Bourgogne, although it did not surpass the record set in 2023.
This growth is partly due to an increase in vineyard area dedicated to Crémant de Bourgogne, which now covers nearly 4,000 hectares. The expansion reflects changing consumer preferences, with more interest in sparkling wines. Crémant de Bourgogne now accounts for 15% of all wine produced in Burgundy, up from 13% two years ago. This makes it the third largest appellation in Burgundy by volume, showing that it has become a key economic driver for the region rather than a secondary product.
Sales figures also show strong momentum. In 2025, sales volumes increased by 9%, a notable achievement given the challenging international market for sparkling wines. Export markets played a major role in this growth. For the first time, more than half of Crémant de Bourgogne’s production was exported, with 51% of volumes sold abroad—a 14% increase compared to 2024. Over the past decade, Crémant de Bourgogne has contributed to 20% of the growth in French AOC sparkling wine exports outside Champagne.
The export markets are diverse. The United States and Canada are among the top destinations by both volume and value, despite global economic uncertainty. Scandinavian countries—Sweden, Norway and Denmark—have become strategic markets where Crémant de Bourgogne is now the most sold Burgundy wine. The United Kingdom has seen a strong comeback, with over one million bottles sold and increases of 27% in volume and 29% in value. Italy has entered the top five export markets with significant growth in higher-value segments. Only two markets—Netherlands and Japan—showed slight declines due to specific local factors.
Domestically, Crémant de Bourgogne remains strong. In France, large-scale retail accounts for 28% of sales volumes, or about six million bottles sold, with purchases up by 1.4%. The average price is around eight euros per bottle, about one euro higher than its main competitors. This pricing helps position Crémant de Bourgogne as an accessible yet quality wine on store shelves.
The range of wines under this appellation has also expanded significantly. Today’s offerings include options for various occasions: from casual aperitifs to food pairings, vintage cuvées, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, rosés and special or single-vineyard bottlings. This segmentation helps meet diverse consumer expectations and strengthens the identity of the appellation.
Despite recent climate challenges affecting agriculture across France, producers report that stocks are balanced and able to meet demand without pressure on supply. The sector’s development strategy focuses on controlled growth supported by increasing recognition of Burgundy’s expertise in sparkling winemaking and strict quality controls.
In 2025, Crémant de Bourgogne celebrated its 50th anniversary as an official appellation—a milestone that highlighted its history and tradition within Burgundy’s winemaking culture. The appellation is preparing for regulatory changes as well: new rules under review would allow official mention of specific vineyard sites on certain labels. This would formalize a long-standing practice in Burgundy where single-vineyard expression has been central since the nineteenth century.
With growing international reach and a solid foundation at home, Crémant de Bourgogne is positioning itself as a major name among French sparkling wines while maintaining its roots in Burgundy’s winemaking heritage.
