A new winery is set to open in the heart of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, aiming to revive ancient Roman viticulture. The Tenute Capaldo Group, in collaboration with the park's management, plans to establish a six-hectare vineyard focused on 100% organic production. This partnership will also include the construction of winemaking and aging facilities, enabling a complete production cycle within the park. Feudi di San Gregorio, part of the Tenute Capaldo Group, has been researching indigenous Campania grape varieties for 40 years. Pierpaolo Sirch, the winery's production manager, is collaborating with Professor Attilio Scienza from the University of Milan and park archaeologists on this project. Their aim is to produce authentic, high-quality wines and make the winery a key attraction for park visitors.
Antonio Capaldo, president of Feudi di San Gregorio, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the cultural significance of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. He emphasized the project's potential to revive Pompeii as a center of production and exchange, restoring its historical roots. Capaldo acknowledged the need for time and significant investment but stressed the project's long-term vision for future generations and sustainability.
Since the 1990s, the park's research laboratory has been conducting botanical studies to analyze ancient Pompeii's vineyards. Researchers have explored the historical and scientific aspects of these vineyards, as well as the viticultural techniques used in ancient times. Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel noted that the vineyards aim to tell the story of the ancient city from various perspectives. The winery is part of a broader archaeo-farming initiative, which includes optimizing olive tree cultivation and social farming projects within a cultural and social framework.
