Bordeaux 2016 Wine Prices Rebound After Years of Volatility, Liv-ex Study Finds

2026-03-03

Top-rated labels stabilize as market data shows renewed value opportunities for collectors and investors in the celebrated vintage

A new study from Liv-ex, the global exchange for fine wine, has shed light on the performance of Bordeaux 2016 wines a decade after their release. The analysis follows recent tastings and tracks the price movements of these wines over the past ten years, highlighting areas where value opportunities are starting to reappear for collectors and investors.

According to Liv-ex data, seven out of the ten highest-rated 2016 Bordeaux wines, as scored by critic Neal Martin, have seen price increases in the last six months. This marks a shift after a period of volatility that saw some top labels experience sharp declines in early 2025. Wines such as Vieux Château Certan and La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge, which had previously dropped in value, have now stabilized and begun to recover.

Tom Burchfield, Head of Market Intelligence at Liv-ex, commented on the findings, stating that 2016 stands among the great modern Bordeaux vintages. He noted that while the recent ten-year tastings serve as a critical test for these wines’ reputations, prices for many leading labels are showing signs of stability. Burchfield pointed to Cheval Blanc and Haut-Brion as examples of wines that appear to have reached their lowest price points and may now represent lower-risk options for collectors who do not yet own them.

The study also reveals that out of 45 red Bordeaux wines from the Bordeaux 500 index tracked by Liv-ex, 14 are currently trading below their original ex-négociant release price, and six are below their ex-château price. Furthermore, 31 of these wines are priced below their ex-London release price. This suggests that despite recent stabilization, there remain several wines available at or below their initial market values.

Neal Martin’s ratings place the 2016 vintage second only to the 2022s among recent Bordeaux releases, with an average score of 96.1 compared to 96.5 for the 2022s. Notably, Martin awarded perfect 100-point scores to both Cos d’Estournel and Latour from the 2016 vintage.

The broader trend across Bordeaux 2016s is one of stabilization after a period of decline. The blue-chip names in particular are showing renewed momentum. For merchants, investors, and collectors monitoring the market, this could signal that Bordeaux 2016 has reached its short-term floor and that selective buying opportunities may be emerging.
