Ammura, the Etna estate owned by Tommasi Family Estates, has returned to Wine Paris this February to present its latest wine, Liuni Etna Rosso DOC 2022 Contrada Alboretto–Chiuse del Signore. The debut of this new label took place alongside the unveiling of the 2023 vintages of Ammura Etna Rosso DOC and Etna Bianco DOC. The event marks another step in the Tommasi family’s ongoing efforts to highlight the unique qualities of Mount Etna’s wine region, which is gaining recognition for its ability to produce wines that reflect both tradition and a modern sense of identity.
Ammura is located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the town of Linguaglossa within the Etna Natural Park. The estate sits at an altitude of 570 meters above sea level and covers 15 hectares planted with Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grapes. The area is known for its volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals and provide ideal conditions for grape growing. The vineyards benefit from strong temperature variations and constant ventilation, factors that help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the wines.
The Liuni Etna Rosso DOC 2022 is produced from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes grown at about 650 meters above sea level in Contrada Alboretto–Chiuse del Signore. This single-vineyard site is considered one of the most suitable areas on Etna for this grape variety. The soil here consists of black sands and layered volcanic deposits, which offer excellent drainage and contribute to low yields and precise expression in the wine. Only 2,500 bottles were produced from this vintage, emphasizing its artisanal nature.
According to Pierangelo Tommasi, CEO of Tommasi Family Estates, the goal with Liuni was to showcase a new aspect of Etna’s character by focusing on a single contrada. He describes the wine as a direct reflection of the energy of the volcano, aiming to capture both elegance and structure typical of Nerello Mascalese grown in this environment. The 2022 vintage benefited from balanced weather conditions that allowed for even ripening, resulting in a wine with layered aromas, vibrant acidity, and silky tannins.
Ammura’s participation at Wine Paris highlights not only its new releases but also its commitment to research and interpretation of the Etna terroir. Since acquiring Ammura in 2022, Tommasi Family Estates has invested in both vineyard management and modern winemaking facilities designed to respect local traditions while pursuing high quality. The estate’s location near Taormina and its setting within a landscape marked by lava formations such as Pietracannone add to its distinctiveness.
Etna has become an important region for Italian wine exports, attracting attention for its unique volcanic terroir and contemporary approach to winemaking. Ammura’s new Liuni label adds another voice to this evolving landscape, offering consumers a taste that is closely tied to its origin while meeting current standards for quality and style. The presentation at Wine Paris serves as an opportunity for international buyers and critics to experience firsthand how producers like Tommasi are shaping the future of Sicilian wine through careful stewardship of both land and tradition.
