Wente Family Estates Unveils 4.3 MW Solar Project to Power California Winery Operations

2026-04-08

New solar arrays are expected to generate over 7 million kWh annually, significantly reducing the winery’s carbon footprint.

Wente Family Estates, the oldest continuously family-owned and operated winery in the United States, has announced the launch of a major solar energy project across its California operations. The initiative, developed in partnership with Regatta Solutions, features a 4.3 megawatt direct current (MWdc) solar system. This marks a significant step in the winery’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The new solar arrays have been installed at several key locations, including Wente’s flagship winery on Tesla Road in Livermore Valley, Murrieta’s Well, and the Wente Family Vineyards Tasting Lounge. The system is expected to generate more than 7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy each year. According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, this annual output will offset carbon emissions equivalent to removing 865 gasoline-powered vehicles from the road for one year or avoiding over 9.4 million miles driven. The energy produced will also be enough to power 1,278 homes for a year. In terms of environmental impact, the carbon offset is comparable to growing 61,297 tree seedlings for a decade or protecting 3,718 acres of U.S. forests.

Karl Wente, Chief Operating Officer and fifth-generation winegrower, emphasized that this project continues a family philosophy that dates back 143 years. “At Wente Family Estates, we view ourselves as stewards of the land first and winemakers second,” Wente said. “Our commitment to sustainability isn’t a static goal; it’s a process of continuous improvement. By investing in this 4.3 MW solar project, we are ensuring that our operations are as resilient and forward-thinking as the vineyards we tend.”

Wente Family Estates is among a select group of California wineries holding the Certified Sustainable Vineyard and Winery designation from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance for both its estate vineyards and winery operations. The new solar project adds to other sustainability initiatives at Wente, such as advanced water recycling systems for vineyard irrigation, a transition to lightweight glass bottles in 2023 to reduce transportation emissions, no-till farming practices with cover crops to improve soil health and biodiversity, and maintaining greenhouse gas emission intensity at less than 25% of the international winery average according to a recent third-party audit.

Founded in 1883 and now managed by fourth- and fifth-generation family members, Wente Family Estates operates certified sustainable vineyards in Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay, and Arroyo Seco in Monterey County. Its wines are distributed across all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide under brands including Wente Family Vineyards, Murrieta’s Well, Angels Ink, Ravel & Stitch, Hayes Ranch, and others. The company also serves as the U.S. importer for several international wine brands.

In recognition of its leadership in sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities, Wente Family Estates received the Wine Institute’s California Green Medal Leader Award in April 2022. The estate is also known as a destination for wine tourism in California’s Livermore Valley, offering wine tastings, food experiences, outdoor events, wedding venues, and an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Greg Norman.

Regatta Solutions, based in San Juan Capistrano, California, specializes in developing smart power and clean energy systems across the Western United States. The company integrates technologies such as solar photovoltaic systems, energy storage solutions, fuel cells, combined heat and power (CHP), and intelligent microgrids.

The new solar installation at Wente Family Estates demonstrates how traditional winemaking can coexist with modern technology to reduce environmental impact while supporting business resilience for future generations.
