The Consorzio di Tutela vini DOC Sicilia has reported a strong performance for 2025, closing the year with positive results in both production and international market presence. The organization, which represents more than 7,000 winegrowers and about 500 bottlers across Sicily, has focused its efforts on promoting native grape varieties and enhancing the island’s reputation for quality, sustainability, and tradition.
After two challenging harvests, the 2025 vintage marked a return to more regular production levels. According to Camillo Pugliesi, Director of the Consorzio DOC Sicilia, approximately 3 million hectoliters of wine were produced from 97,000 hectares of vineyards. This recovery places Sicily among Italy’s leading wine regions and highlights its ability to balance biodiversity with high-quality output.
On the international front, market trends varied by region. The United States remained stable for Sicilian wines despite ongoing trade policy challenges. However, Asian markets showed significant growth in demand for DOC Sicilia wines. In response, the Consorzio increased its promotional activities and communication efforts in Asia to strengthen its position and reach new consumers.
White wines from Sicily were especially successful in 2025. Grillo and Lucido (also known as Catarratto) led sales, with Lucido covering 29,000 hectares and standing as the most widely planted white grape variety on the island. Its adaptability allows producers to create a range of wines, from fresh and easy-drinking styles to more structured whites suitable for aging, as well as high-quality sparkling bases. The recently completed “Vista Lucido” project showcased this versatility.
Research into Sicily’s native grapes continued throughout the year. Micro-vinification projects in 2025 identified seven to eight biotypes of particular interest among the more than 70 indigenous varieties found on the island. These discoveries are expected to further enrich Sicily’s diverse wine landscape in coming years.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Consorzio plans to launch new communication and promotional initiatives. Participation at Vinitaly, one of Italy’s most important wine fairs, will be a key event. Additional activities will target both industry professionals and consumers through dedicated events in Italy and abroad. The goal is to present Sicily as a unique wine-producing region that combines territory, culture, and winemaking style.
The Consorzio DOC Sicilia oversees a system that produces over 80 million bottles annually. Its coordinated approach has helped strengthen the global reputation of Sicilian wines, positioning them as modern expressions of a region with deep historical roots. As international interest grows—particularly in Asia—the organization continues to invest in research, promotion, and quality improvement to maintain momentum into the next year.
