Recent research by Censis and NielsenIQ shows that the “Italy” brand is now valued at 2.077 trillion euros, with food ranking as the most recognizable sector worldwide. In 2024, products made in Italy generated 785 billion euros in revenue, including 376 billion euros from exports. More than 237,000 active companies are involved in this sector, highlighting its importance to the national economy.
Among Italian food products, extra virgin olive oil stands out as a key driver of the country’s agri-food industry and a symbol of Italian cultural identity. According to data from Istat, there are currently 30,595 agricultural businesses in Italy dedicated to growing olives, employing nearly 50,000 people. The industrial side of olive oil production includes 2,521 companies with about 7,000 workers. Italy also boasts 42 protected designation of origin (DOP) and eight protected geographical indication (IGP) oils and fats. The regions of Sicily, Campania and Puglia are among the most prominent in this sector.
In 2024, Italian olive oil exports reached a value of 3.1 billion euros. Of this amount, extra virgin olive oil alone accounted for 2.5 billion euros. The United States is the main importer of Italian olive oil, purchasing products worth 948.5 million euros—about 30.7% of total exports. Germany follows with imports worth 434.5 million euros (14.1%), then France with 194.9 million euros (6.3%), Japan with 151.3 million euros (4.9%), and Spain with 136.3 million euros (4.4%). The value of Italian olive oil abroad continues to grow, especially in the U.S., where sales have reached 2.1 million euros.
At a recent conference held at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy in Rome, Minister Adolfo Urso highlighted the growing international reputation of Italian olive oil alongside wine. He described Italian cuisine as a global heritage and emphasized the importance of promoting excellence in both sectors.
The event also marked the announcement of the second year of “Evo Masterclass,” an educational project created by Oleificio Zucchi—a leading olive oil company based in Cremona—in partnership with Renaia, the National Network of Hotel Institutes. The project aims to transfer knowledge about high-quality olive oil to future professionals in food and hospitality.
“Evo Masterclass” is a three-year program designed for students specializing in gastronomy and hospitality services at Renaia institutes across Italy. Its goal is to provide technical, cultural and professional tools to help students appreciate and promote olive oil in cooking, service and storytelling.
Alessia Zucchi, president and CEO of Oleificio Zucchi, said that the Censis and NielsenIQ research confirms extra virgin olive oil as a key asset for quality Italian products worldwide. She described “Evo Masterclass” as a concrete opportunity to combine tradition and sustainability while offering students a unique educational experience.
Vito Pecoraro, president of Renaia, added that the project gives students an exceptional chance to learn about one of Italy’s culinary treasures in depth.
The research findings underline how food culture remains central not only for Italians but also for international consumers who associate Italy with quality cuisine and authentic products. As initiatives like “Evo Masterclass” expand, they aim to ensure that future generations continue to uphold and promote Italy’s reputation for excellence in food and beverage around the world.
