German customs data analyzed by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organization (OIVE) show that Germany increased its wine imports in value during the first half of 2025 by 7.1%, reaching 1.29 billion euros, an increase of 85.4 million euros compared to the same period last year. The average price per liter rose by 7.9%, now standing at 2.00 euros per liter.
The overall decline in volume is mainly due to a reduction in bulk wine imports, which dropped by 4%. In contrast, Germany increased its purchases of packaged wines, including sparkling, still bottled, and Bag-in-Box (BiB) wines. Imports of these packaged wines grew by 9.2% in value and 3.5% in volume, reaching 1.05 billion euros and 291.1 million liters, respectively. The average price for packaged wine rose by 5.6% to 3.62 euros per liter.
Bulk wine imports to Germany in the first half of 2025 decreased by 1.5% in value and 4.1% in volume, totaling 241.65 million euros and 356.1 million liters. The average price for bulk wine increased by 2.7% to 0.68 euros per liter.

The total volume of packaged wines (sparkling, bottled, and BiB) increased by 3.5%, led by bottled wine with a 3.6% rise. Bag-in-Box wine also saw a 10% increase in volume, while sparkling wine imports dropped by 1.6%. Bulk wine volume fell by 4.1%.
Packaged wine accounted for 63.3% of Germany’s wine imports by value and 38.4% by volume in the first half of 2025. Since 2020, all wine categories except bulk have shown positive compound annual growth rates (CAGR) in value: sparkling wine at 7.7%, bottled wine at 0.35%, and Bag-in-Box at 10.5%. Bulk wine value has declined by 1.3% since 2020.
In terms of average price, Germany paid 3.62 euros per liter for packaged wines and 2.00 euros per liter for bulk wine in the first half of 2025. The average price of Italian wine increased by 8.5%, while French wine rose by 7.92%. Spanish wine saw a modest price increase from 0.88 euros per liter in the first half of 2024 to 0.89 euros per liter in the same period of 2025, a rise of 1.2%.
Austria recorded the highest growth among Germany’s wine suppliers in the first half of 2025, with a 15.5% increase in value. Italy maintained its lead in value with a market share of 40.6%, followed by France with 27.8% and Spain with 15.5%. In volume, Spain held a 36.1% share, followed closely by Italy at 36%, and France at 13.3%.
The data reflect a shift in German wine imports toward higher-value products and a preference for packaged wines over bulk, with Italy and France strengthening their positions in value and Spain maintaining its lead in volume despite a slight decline.
