Leadership change comes as industry faces regulatory shifts, evolving consumer trends, and economic pressures across the United States

The Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) has announced the election of Cutter Smith, President of Eder Bros., Inc., as its new Chairman. The decision was made public today as Smith steps into the role previously held by Dina Opici, President of Opici Family Distributing, who has completed her term as Chairwoman.

Cutter Smith leads Eder Bros., Inc., a family-owned wholesale business based in Connecticut. He now takes charge of WSWA at a time when the beverage alcohol industry is facing shifting consumer preferences, complex regulatory changes, and economic pressures. In his first statement as Chairman, Smith said, “It is a privilege to serve as Chairman of WSWA. Following in the footsteps of so many who have led before me, my focus will be on ensuring WSWA remains resourceful, nimble, and dynamic — a true partner to our members as they navigate challenges and uncover opportunities in an evolving industry.”

WSWA represents wine and spirits wholesalers across the United States. The association plays a key role in advocating for its members on issues such as tariffs, distribution regulations, and market access. The organization also provides resources and support to help members adapt to changes in the marketplace.

Francis Creighton, President and CEO of WSWA, expressed gratitude for Dina Opici’s leadership during her tenure. “On behalf of WSWA and our members, I want to sincerely thank Dina Opici for her outstanding service and leadership during one of the most dynamic times our industry has ever experienced,” Creighton said. He highlighted Opici’s efforts in guiding the association through significant challenges, including tariff disputes and regulatory shifts.

Creighton also welcomed Smith’s appointment, noting his experience and vision. “I am excited to work alongside Cutter as he takes on this role, bringing his experience, vision, and commitment to advancing the interests of our members and strengthening the industry,” Creighton said.

Smith’s leadership comes at a time when wholesalers are adapting to new trends in consumer behavior and increased scrutiny from regulators. The beverage alcohol sector has seen changes in how products reach consumers, with more emphasis on digital sales channels and evolving state laws affecting distribution.

As Chairman, Smith is expected to focus on supporting WSWA’s member companies as they respond to these developments. His background in a family-run business gives him insight into the challenges faced by many distributors across the country.

The transition marks a new chapter for WSWA as it continues its work representing wholesalers’ interests at both state and federal levels. The association will look to Smith’s leadership to help guide its strategy amid ongoing changes in the industry landscape.
