Premiere Napa Valley auction reaches $3.3 million, reflecting strong market interest despite industry challenges.

The 29th Annual Premiere Napa Valley trade-only wine auction wrapped up recently, showcasing the 2023 vintage red wines. The event saw a significant boost in sales, reaching $3.3 million, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Conducted by Sotheby’s, the auction featured a larger number of lots, indicating a positive trend in the wine market. Nick Pegna, global head of wines and spirits at Sotheby’s, noted the enthusiasm of Napa Valley's supporters, even in challenging market conditions.

The auction offered 194 lots, with 167 from the 2023 vintage. Many lots were unique, sold in five, 10, or 20-case increments, exclusively available to winning bidders, primarily retailers and distributors. Sixteen lots were collaborative efforts between different wineries and winemakers. The interest in the auction was fueled by the anticipation surrounding the 2023 vintage. Wine author Karen MacNeil expressed confidence in the vintage's potential to become legendary in Napa Valley's history.

The event also served as a reflection of the wine industry's mood amid declining sales and concerns about wine consumption. Peter Molinari of Uovo Wine highlighted the importance of connecting with winemakers and appreciating their dedication to wine cultivation. The auction week included opportunities for the trade to engage directly with winegrowers, often at their wineries, and participate in tastings. Over 30 wineries hosted events, facilitating networking and exploration of Napa Valley's vintages.

Among the top 20 red wine lots were offerings from Simon Family Estate, The Mascot, Hourglass, and Quintessa, among others. Notable joint lots included collaborations between JennaMarise Wines and Robert Foley Vineyards, and Grgich Hills Estate with Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery. The top five white wine lots featured Hudson, Schramsberg Vineyards, and a joint lot by Paula Kornell Sparkling Wine and Charles Krug.

Linda Reiff, president and CEO of Napa Valley Vintners, expressed satisfaction with the auction's success, highlighting the dedication of trade partners and the quality of the 2023 vintage. The event's in-person attendance sold out in advance, but global wine trade members participated online through Sotheby’s. White wines from the auction are expected to hit the market this fall, while red wines will age in barrels for up to three years before release.

Proceeds from the auction support Napa Valley Vintners’ initiatives to promote and protect the region. A list of accounts selling Premiere Napa Valley wines is available on their website. The auction's success underscores the enduring appeal and quality of Napa Valley wines, even in a challenging market environment.
